A free fractions test for grades 3 to 5
Fractions are a set of separate skills, and a child can be strong in one and lost in another. A child might compare fractions well but freeze on 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6. A single score hides that.
Our free fractions test checks 7 skills with 3 questions each: equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, a fraction of a number, adding and subtracting with the same denominator, and adding and subtracting with different denominators. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes, there's no timer, and the results show each skill as strong, practicing or needs work.
One example from each part
- Equivalent fractions: 2/3 = 8/12.
- Comparing: 3/5 > 1/2.
- Fraction of a number: 3/4 of 20 = 15.
- Same denominator: 2/7 + 3/7 = 5/7.
- Different denominators: 1/4 + 1/3 = 7/12.

Tips for parents
- Let your child use scrap paper. Drawing a bar or a pizza is a good strategy, not cheating.
- "I don't know yet" is a useful answer. It tells you where to start.
- Look at the skill that's weakest and earliest in the list. Later skills build on it.
