The 6 times table, with two tricks that help
The 6 times table feels hard because it comes after the easy rows. The good news is your child already knows most of it. Six groups is five groups plus one more group, and the 5 row is usually solid by now.
Here's the full table so you can check answers quickly:
The 6 times table
- 6 × 1 = 6
- 6 × 2 = 12
- 6 × 3 = 18
- 6 × 4 = 24
- 6 × 5 = 30
- 6 × 6 = 36
- 6 × 7 = 42
- 6 × 8 = 48
- 6 × 9 = 54
- 6 × 10 = 60
- 6 × 11 = 66
- 6 × 12 = 72
Two tricks for the 6 times table
- Five plus one more. 6 × 7 = 5 × 7 + 7, and 5 × 7 + 7 = 42. This works for every fact: 6 × 9 = 45 + 9 = 54.
- The even-number pattern. When you multiply 6 by an even number, the answer ends in that same number: 6 × 2 = 12, 6 × 4 = 24, 6 × 6 = 36, 6 × 8 = 48.

Tips for parents
- Mix the order. Saying the table from 1 to 12 in order tests memory of the song, not the facts.
- The hardest ones are usually 6 × 7, 6 × 8 and 6 × 9. Spend extra time there.
- Doubling the 3 times table also works: three groups, twice.
