What math should a 2nd grader know?
In 2nd grade, children work with bigger numbers. Common Core goals include adding and subtracting within 100 fluently, understanding hundreds, tens and ones up to 1,000, skip counting by 5s, 10s and 100s, and knowing all sums of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of the year.
Second graders also meet equal groups and arrays, which is the start of multiplication, and work with money and time to the nearest five minutes.
Examples of 2nd grade math
- Adding with regrouping: 38 + 47 = 85. The 8 and 7 make 15, so carry a ten.
- Subtracting with regrouping: 62 − 27 = 35.
- Place value: 345 = 300 + 40 + 5.
- Equal groups: 3 groups of 4 apples is 12 apples, the same as 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
6 second grade practice questions
- 36 + 25 = ?
- 48 + 19 = ?
- 70 − 34 = ?
- 91 − 46 = ?
- 125 + 50 = ?
- 300 + 60 + 2 = ?
Show answers
- 36 + 25 = 61
- 48 + 19 = 67
- 70 − 34 = 36
- 91 − 46 = 45
- 125 + 50 = 175
- 300 + 60 + 2 = 362
Tips for parents
- Count money: coins are great place value practice.
- Practice skip counting out loud while climbing stairs or clapping.
- Make arrays with snacks: 3 rows of 5 crackers.
