What math should a 4th grader know?
Fourth grade takes the multiplication facts from 3rd grade and puts them to work. Common Core goals include multiplying up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers and two-digit by two-digit numbers, dividing up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers (with remainders), and adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers with the standard method.
Fractions grow too: equivalent fractions, comparing, adding and subtracting with the same denominator, and writing tenths and hundredths as decimals.
Examples of 4th grade math
- 2-digit by 1-digit: 34 × 6 = 204.
- Division: 84 ÷ 4 = 21.
- Equivalent fractions: 3/4 = 6/8.
- Same denominator: 2/5 + 2/5 = 4/5.
- Decimals: 37 hundredths is 0.37, and 37/100 = 0.37.
6 fourth grade practice questions
- 23 × 4 = ?
- 47 × 6 = ?
- 96 ÷ 4 = ?
- 2/3 = ?/6
- 3/10 + 4/10 = ?
- 7/10 = ? (as a decimal)
Show answers
- 23 × 4 = 92
- 47 × 6 = 282
- 96 ÷ 4 = 24
- 2/3 = 4/6
- 3/10 + 4/10 = 7/10
- 7/10 = 0.7 (as a decimal)
Tips for parents
- Slow multiplication facts show up as slow long multiplication. Check the facts first.
- Use money to explain decimals: 0.37 is 37 cents.
- Ask your child to estimate first (34 × 6 is about 30 × 6) and compare.
