What math should a 5th grader know?
Fifth grade is the last year of elementary math in many schools, and it pulls a lot together. Common Core goals include multiplying multi-digit numbers fluently with the standard method, dividing four-digit numbers by two-digit numbers, adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, multiplying fractions, working with decimals to the hundredths, and finding the volume of a box.
Fractions are the biggest step. Gaps from 4th grade, such as equivalent fractions, tend to show up here.
Examples of 5th grade math
- 2-digit by 2-digit: 24 × 36 = 864.
- Dividing by a 2-digit number: 864 ÷ 24 = 36.
- Unlike denominators: 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6.
- Fraction of a number: 3/5 of 40 = 24.
- Decimals: 2.45 + 1.3 = 3.75.
- Volume: a box 3 by 4 by 5 has volume 3 × 4 × 5 = 60 cubic units.
6 fifth grade practice questions
- 32 × 14 = ?
- 672 ÷ 21 = ?
- 2/3 + 1/4 = ?
- 3/8 of 32 = ?
- 4.6 + 2.85 = ?
- 2 × 5 × 6 = ?
Show answers
- 32 × 14 = 448
- 672 ÷ 21 = 32
- 2/3 + 1/4 = 11/12
- 3/8 of 32 = 12
- 4.6 + 2.85 = 7.45
- 2 × 5 × 6 = 60
Tips for parents
- If fractions with unlike denominators are hard, check equivalent fractions first.
- Line up the decimal points when adding decimals.
- Build boxes from cubes or sugar cubes to make volume concrete.
